Jamie Carragher explains why Mourinho did not play Salah at Chelsea
Following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Mourinho’s Manchester United, Carragher shared a few thoughts on why the Egyptian was excluded from his former manager’s plans.
“Talking about the change in him, let’s not forget he’s had a great career; it was only at Chelsea where it didn’t quite happen for him,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“A lot of that was because he didn’t play. It was very difficult to get that run of games.
“He maybe felt the manager, Jose Mourinho, didn’t have the confidence in him that other managers had and give him that freedom.
“That’s not a criticism of Mourinho but often with his wide players he expects them to do as much going backwards as going forwards.
“He still classes himself as a winger but he very rarely finds himself there, he finds himself in striker positions, in-between the lines like a No 10 position. I think that helps with the goals he gets.
“He’s not a winger in the sense that he’s going to run at a full-back and beat him and put a cross in. That’s not his game.”
Salah moved to Chelsea in January 2014, yet failed to make 10 starts for the Blues, which made him eventually move to Serie A were he pulled virtuoso performances for Fiorentina and Roma.
Following his scintillating football in Italy, he returned to the Premier League with Liverpool and managed to fire 24 goals in the Premier League, standing level with Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race.
