OFFICIAL: Three Egyptian teams to participate in 2018 Arab Club Championship
Egyptian Premier League outfits Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily have confirmed that they will participate in the 2018 Arab Club Championship.
The knockout tournament will take place from August 2018 until April 2019 and will witness 32 teams, with them playing each other over two legs.
It has been confirmed today, that Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily will participate in the tournament, signing the contracts for participation in the Arab Championship.
Al Ahly reached the semi-finals of last year’s version, before losing to Jordan’s Al-Faisaly, while Zamalek were knocked out from the group-stages. Meanwhile, Ismaily’s last participation came in 2013, when they lost to Algeria’s USM Alger, who went on to win the title.
The Red Devils won the tournament in 1996 and were runners-up in 1997. Zamalek were the last Egyptian team to lift the title, when they beat Kuwaiti side Al Kuwait 2-1 in 2003 at the Cairo International Stadium.
Egypt’s Ismaily and ENPPI also reached the final, but lost the title to Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien and Morocco’s Raja Casablanca in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
Espérance de Tunis of Tunisia are the title holders after beating Jordan’s Al Faisaly 3-2 in the final at the Alexandria Stadium.
