Héctor Cúper speaks on Portugal friendly, World Cup, his time in Egypt

Egyptian National Team coach spoke in a press conference on Tuesday about upcoming friendlies and the imminent

The 62-year-old manager spoke in a press conference on Tuesday and began with remarks on the upcoming friendly against on March 23.

“We always respect the opponent even if it is the winner of the UEFA Euro Cup Portugal, one of the best teams in the world. It is a very strong and important friendly for us,” Cúper began the press conference.

“We have studied Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo like we studied Uruguay and its stars Cavani and Suarez. We will see in the game how we will do,” the Argentinian coach continued.

Cúper had previously called up 17 players abroad and on Tuesday morning called up the domestic-based players for the March Camp. The friendlies come in preparation for ’s first World Cup in 28 years. The Pharaohs were drawn into Group A with hosts Russia, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.

“There is no player that has secured his place at the World Cup. There are many factors that influence that,” Cúper added.

“It is possible for many things to change and we will keep an eye on all the players. I tried to find National Teams that make drastic changes prior to big, important games, but failed to find anyone,” the CAF coach of the year added.

“The Argentinian National Team, for example, don’t change any of the players except maybe two at most. However, this doesn’t mean that any player has secured his spot and we will continue to search and watch players till we reach the final 23-man squad,” Cúper revealed.

“We will try to play well at the World cup and we will try many things against Portugal and Ronaldo,” he mentioned.

Héctor Cúper has coached the National Team since 2015 and achieved many of the EFA’s main goals in that period, including reaching the African Cup of Nations for the first time in three editions and reaching the World Cup. Cúper also led the team to a finalist standing at the African Cup of Nations despite having many injuries affect the team leading up to the match against Cameroon.

“To reach your goal everyone must do their part. In the last three years we have gone through tough situations but the end results was very good and we have achieved good results,” the former Inter Milan coach added.

“We will always try to achieve the best results and I thank Hany Abo-Reda the president of the EFA on the past period and his support for the National Team and giving us full freedom. I thank Egypt and the Egyptian National Team and everyone who supports the team,” Cúper concluded.

In addition to being a football/soccer and basketball enthusiast, I am currently pursuing a combined BS/MD degree at VCU. I also currently work as a Pharmacy Technician in my spare time.
