Cùper speaks out on Salah, World Cup draw, Portugal friendly

has rejected suggestions that the Pharaohs are a one-man team, adding that Uruguay is the strongest side in his World Cup group.

The Argentine manager has been a revelation since his appointment in March 2015, guiding the Pharaohs in 30 games, winning 20, drawing four and losing in six.

He guided the Pharaohs to the for the first time in 28 years, and despite scoring five goals and assisting two times in the qualifiers, Cuper believes that the Liverpool winger wouldn’t have achieved this without the help of his teammates.

“I have worked for three years with a wonderful group of players and assistants. It’s impossible that one player can achieve this alone,” Cuper told ON E.

“Lionel Messi needs the help of his teammates to win trophies. I don’t want to diminish his or Salah’s roles with their teams, but there are stars who play alongside them,” he added.

The Pharaohs were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Russia, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, with their opening game being against Uruguay on June 15, before facing Russia on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 24.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cùper said, after analyzing their opponents, he came to terms that only the South Americans were the strongest side in their group and that Russia and Saudi Arabia are on the same level as Egypt.

“We have made a general analysis of the three teams that are with us in the group and I think Uruguay is the strongest side.

“Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia are on the same level, however, the Russians have the advantages of playing at home.”

Egypt will face Portugal on the 23rd of March in an international friendly, before meeting up with Greece on a second friendly game on March 27 during their World Cup preparatory training camp in Switzerland.

And Cùper said the fans were agog to watch Mohamed Salah facing Cristiano Ronaldo, confirming that Salah will feature in the friendly.

“We are focusing now on Portugal and Greece friendlies. The fans want to watch Mohamed Salah playing against Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal game,” he said.

“Salah will play that game and will use our first-team, but I don’t know whether Ronaldo will play or not,” Cùper concluded.
