Egyptian Women’s Premier League mid-season review
As the first half of the 2017/18 Egyptian Women’s Premier League season has come to a close, KingFut’s Evrosina Isaac takes a look at the league’s results and its most remarkable moments.
Almost three weeks after the league was supposed to kick-off, the Egyptian Women’s Premier League finally began on December 8. Since then, 249 goals have been scored, a team has withdrawn, and controversy has marred the matches.
Wadi Degla entered the season as both the cup and league title holders. The team have long dominated the women’s football scene in Egypt and were looking for their 10th straight title. However, Degla are facing a tough competition this season from El Tayaran.
The league kicked off with 12 teams, but currently has just 11 teams after Tanmia Sport Club withdrew after the first matchday.
The result of the week was Maadi Sports and Yacht’s thrashing of El Tanmia Sport. Striker Magy Magdy scored what many believed to be a worldwide record of 15 goals in the match. El Tanmia Sport, who had many obstacles entering the season, withdrew after the heavy result.
