Etoile du Sahel advance to group stage despite defeat to Plateau United

Egypt international came on as a late substitute as Etoile du Sahel sealed their spot in the CAF Champions League group stage.

Despite losing 1-0 to Plateau United F.C. in Nigeria on Sunday, the Tunisian side booked their spot in the next round of the competition with a 4-3 aggregate score. Marei had scored Etoile’s first goal in their 4-2 victory over the Nigerian side in the first leg of the round of 32 earlier this month.

The 25-year-old, however, wasn’t included in the team’s starting line-up on Sunday and came on to replace Guinean forward Alkhaly Bangoura five minutes away from time.

The Nigerian side needed to earn a 2-0 win at home to advance to the group stage of Africa’s top-tier competition on the away goal rule. The hosts were off to a good start as Tosin Omoyele opened the scoring at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano mid-way through the first half.

They had a number of attempts throughout the game but failed to score a second as Omoyele’s goal turned out to be the game’s only goal, securing Etoile’s passage to the next round.
