OFFICIAL: Bidvest Wits terminate Amr Gamal’s contract
Amr Gamal moved to South Africa last summer on a one-year loan deal from Al Ahly and has started strong with them, guiding the Clever Boys to the Telkom Knockout Cup.
Despite that, the 26-year-old hasn’t featured in the club’s last five matches and was left out of their CAF Champions League squad, which prompted talk of a close departure to Finnish giants HJK Helsinki.
The club’s coach Gavin Hunt, who recently said that if he was Hector Cuper he wouldn’t select him for the World Cup, confirmed the player’s departure assuring that he will be joining HJK Helsinki.
“Gamal is gone to Finland. It didn’t work out, it is football,” Hunt told the media. “Yeah, it’s disappointing because I really thought he will do well for us and it didn’t work out because of various football reasons.”
During his time in South Africa, Gamal managed to feature in 13 league games for the Clever Boys, scoring two goals and recording a single assist.
“The mentality was okay, I just felt that there are certain things that the game requires in different countries and obviously it’s unfortunate that he got on the end and missed a lot of chances, but that happens in football,” he added.
Hunt explained that the problem with Gamal’s trial is that he never been out of his country and that foreign players usually take a bit of time to adapt, understand the language and football style in South Africa.
“He was a good player; I thought he would settle in much quicker and it didn’t happen. But you can see anywhere, foreign players do take time to settle,” he concluded.
