Kewell believes Salah might beat Ronaldo, Messi to win Ballon d’Or
Salah is enjoying the best season of his career so far as his outstanding performances with the Reds guided him to lead the Premier League top-scorers race with 28 goals after bagging super hattrick goals against Watford on Saturday.
The former Roma winger is also in pole position in the European Golden Boot race ahead of Lionel Messi, Ciro Immobile and Edinson Cavani.
Several pundits and coaches have compared the Egypt international to the Argentinian star Lionel Messi and others backed him to win PFA player of the year award. Now, Harry Kewell believes the Egyptian can win the Ballon d’Or and end Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi’s grip on the award.
“People are saying about Player of the Year, but I’d even go that next step,” said the manager of League Two club Crawley. “If he was to have a fantastic World Cup, gets a couple of goals and plays well, and then continues again next season, why not go for the Ballon d’Or?”
“He’s got the goals, I don’t see why he couldn’t win it.”
Since 2007, when Kaka won the award, no player other than Ronaldo and Messi was able to win France Football’s prestigious award.
“It’s a part of the game that players believe they can do, but when you get someone who can actually dribble, obviously the best is Messi, who can run at defenders and be able to chop and change on a dime, and Salah can do this, you just can’t stop it.
“That’s the key with Salah – he drives at people, he’s chopping, turning, dribbling and people just don’t know how to deal with him.”
