Al Ahly: We have to pay attention to KCCA, Township Rollers
Al Ahly director of football Sayed Abdel-Hafiz believes the Red Castle were drawn into a balanced group for the 2018 CAF Champions League group stage.
The record eight-time African champions were drawn in Group A alongside Township Rollers of Botswana, Uganda’s KCCA, and Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
Following the draw, Abdel-Hafiz said that it won’t be an easy group, and stressed on the importance of defeating Tunisian side Esperance in their opening game.
“It is a balanced draw. Al Ahly will open our campaign against a strong team like Esperance, and matches between the two sides are always excitement packed,” Abdel-Hafiz said.
Al Ahly will kick off their campaign at home against Esperance before traveling to play against KCCA in Uganda in their second game.
“It is always important to start on a good note, and we will prepare towards that. It is also necessary to pay attention to KCCA and Township Rollers, despite being debutantes at this stage,” he added.
KCCA made it to the group stage after a 1-0 aggregate victory over Ethiopian side Saint George, while Township Rollers beat Tanzanian Young Africans 2-1 on aggregate.
Al Ahly, who lost last year’s final to Wydad Casablanca, are hoping to win a record extending ninth title. The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the quarter-final of the competition.
