Egypt goalkeeping coach Ahmed Nagy praises El-Shenawy after national team debut
Al Ahly goalkeeper El-Shenawy made his national team debut on Friday in Egypt’s 2-1 loss against Portugal after the Pharaohs failed to maintain a one-goal lead and were defeated in the final minutes of the game.
Nagy praised the 29-year-old goalkeeper saying he played a good match and wished that Egypt had come out with a win.
“He [Shenawy] started the match because he deserved it. I wished he could have kept a clean sheet in his first game, of course. He put on a good performance overall,” Nagy told ON Sport.
“We played a good game against the European Champions and no one slacked in the match.
Despite his blunder in the first-half after giving Portugal an indirect freekick inside the box after handling Ahmed Fathi’s backpass in the first half, El-Shennawy provided a string of saves in the second half from Cristiano Ronaldo and Andre Gomes to keep the Pharaohs up before Ronaldo scored a quick-fire last-gasp double.
“We have a new friendly that we want to prove in that we are a strong side through a great performance,” Nagy concluded.
