Héctor Cúper: Egypt won’t be an easy opponent in World Cup
Egypt, who qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, put in a respectable display against Euro 2016 champions Portugal.
“If we say that we are going to Russia without any pressure and just to enjoy we would be wrong, and if we were too optimistic we would also be wrong, we want balance,” Cúper told OnSport TV channel.
“The love of the Egyptian people makes me feel alive. Egypt gave me everything, so I always hope for the best for me and everyone here,” he added
Even though the Pharaohs showed some quality football in their game against Portugal they still suffered a 2-1 loss in the dying minutes of the game, which the Argentinian sees as a very valuable lesson.
“Our dreams are balanced. In four minutes it was possible to beat the European champions, but we did not. Portugal and Uruguay coaches praised us and believed in our abilities why shouldn’t we.
“In the World Cup no one guarantees anything, this will be the first mistake. Egypt will not be easy, I hope we will make the Egyptian people happy,” he added.
“Ronaldo, like Messi can change the course of a game in a minute. As long as the referee didn’t blow his whistle, he can win the match, and this is a useful lesson for us,” he confirmed.
“Once we faced Messi and I worked for a week to make sure to stop his left foot, he scored twice with his right foot! This is a useful lesson for us,” he concluded.
Egypt will be facing Greece on Tuesday in their second and final game of this international break which could an opportunity to see the fresh faces that just joined the national team.
The Pharaohs, were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Russia, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, with their opening game being against Uruguay on June 15, before facing Russia on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25.
