Egypt WC opponents: Uruguay beat Wales, win China Cup
The South American side qualified for the final after beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in the semi-finals with goals from Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, while Wales thrashed China 6-0 in the other semi-final.
Manager Óscar Tabárez made only one change to the squad that beat the Czech Republic, with former Atlético Madrid winger Cristian Rodríguez replacing Giorgian De Arrascaeta.
The first-half ended goalless despite Barcelona forward Luis Suarez hitting the post twice, and it was Cavani who found the breakthrough, scoring the game’s only goal in the 49th minute with a tap-in.
In the third place playoff, the Czech Republic beat hosts China 4-1, with Tomas Kalas, Patrik Schick, Michael Krmencik, Pavel Kaderabek getting on the scoresheet the European side, while Xiaodong Fan scored China’s only goal.
Cavani won the player of the tournament award after netting two goals in two matches, and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale was named the top goalscorer with three goals, which all came against China.
Uruguay were drawn in Group A alongside Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, with their opening game coming against the Pharaohs on June 15.
They will face Uzbekistan next June as their last friendly before the World Cup, while Egypt will still face Greece, Kuwait, and Colombia.
