Egypt WC opponents: Saudi Arabia fall to 4-0 defeat to Belgium
Egypt’s World Cup opponents Saudi Arabia fell to a 4-0 defeat to Belgium in an international friendly at the Heysel stadium in Brussels on Tuesday.
The Saudi national team, fresh off a draw against Ukraine on Friday, faced Belgium as part of their preparations for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where they were drawn in Group A alongside Egypt, hosts Russia and Uruguay.
Saudi Arabia started trailing early in the game and couldn’t close the gap throughout the match. The scoring started off early with Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku as he star striker danced around two defenders just outside of the box and eased it into the left side of the goal in the 13th minute of the match.
Lukaku duplicated his formula once more and doubled Belgium’s lead six minutes before the conclusion of the first half.
Michy Batshuayi, who recently transferred to Borussia Dortmund after a successful spell at Chelsea, capitalised on his current hot streak by scoring in the 77th minute.
Manchester City forward Kevin Du Bruyne took advantage of a defensive error 60 seconds later and extended the lead to four in the 78th minute.
With little hope for a draw, Saudi Arabia switched to the defense for the remainder of the game.
The group A hopefuls will begin their World Cup quest against hosts Russia on June 14, followed by Uruguay on June 20, and will finish their group stage matches against Egypt on June 25.
