Al Ain beat Al-Hilal 2-1 as Hussein El-Shahat sits out with injury
Al Ain entered the match in third place in Group D with four points from four games after drawing 1-1 with Esteghlal Tehran earlier last month. Last year’s finalists Al-Hilal, on the other hand, came in at last place with just two points from four games after losing 2-1 to Qatari side Al Rayyan.
A quick start to the match saw Al-Hilal strike first through right-back Mohamed Al-Burayk in the seventh minute. His strike was Al-Burayk’s second goal of the season after his goal in the opening stages of the Saudi Professional League.
In the 26th minute, Al Ain were awarded a penalty, but Ali Al-Habsi did well to save his attempt. However, just four minutes before half-time, Al-Ain were awarded another penalty. Swedish forward Marcus Berg scored from the spot to equalise for the Boss. Only seven minutes later, the Arabian Gulf League side was awarded a third penalty. Berg put the penalty away to score his fourth goal of the group stages.
The result puts Al Ain into second place with seven points from five games, while Al-Hilal are officially out of the Round of 16 sitting in last place with just two points from five games. Al Ain will next take on Dibba Al-Fujairah in the 20th round of the Arabian Gulf League. Al-Hilal will return to league play as they take on Al-Ahli in what could be the league champion decider on April 7.
