Momen Zakaria scores as Al Ahli book AFC Champions League round of 16 spot
Egypt’s Momen Zakaria scored as Ahli Jeddah earned a 2-0 victory over Tractor Sazi to secure their qualification to the AFC Champions League round of 16.
The Saudi Arabian side defeated their Iranian counterparts on Tuesday in the fifth round of the group stage to increase their tally to 11 points on the top of Group A, three ahead of second-placed UAE side Al-Jazira. Meanwhile, Qatari Al-Gharafa and Tractor Sazi sit third and fourth respectively, with one game to go.
The biggest chance of the first half came in the 19th minute when the Iranian side were awarded a penalty kick after a foul on Amir Motahari but Mehdi Kiani failed to convert from the spot.
After a goalless first half at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium, the Saudi Arabian side needed only four minutes to open the scoring after the restart. Saudi forward Muhannad Assiri broke the deadlock from a powerful strike in the 49th minute.
In the second minute of injury time, Al Ahly loanee Zakaria added the second for the Saudi Pro League side as he collected a loose ball inside the area and sent the ball past Tractor keeper.
This marked Zakaria’s second goal for Al Ahli in the AFC Champions League and his fifth in all competitions since joining the Saudi side on loan during the 2018 winter transfer window.
The results secured Al Ahli qualification to the round of 16, where they’ll be joined by their group A contenders UAE side Jazira.
