Steven Gerrard: De Bruyne and Salah deserve Player of the Year award
“Can’t we have two?” the 37-year-old former Liverpool man asked on BT Sport after Liverpool’s win over Manchester City in first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
“I think they both deserve it,” Gerrard continued.
“I think in terms of Kevin De Bruyne obviously up to a certain point this season he was the top man by far out on his own in terms of form,” he added.
De Bruyne has been at the center of Manchester City’s road to their impending Premier League title. He has featured in 31 games thus far and has contributed to seven goals and 15 assists.
“There will certainly be no complaints from a Liverpool point of view if he went and got it,” the Liverpool U18 coach concluded on the Belgian star.
“I think in Salah’s favour he’s come good right at the right time when you do your [voting] sheets and stuff,” Gerrard reflected.
Mohamed Salah has been on fire since joining the Reds over the summer. He has featured in 31 matches, scoring 29 goals and making nine assists. The ‘Egyptian King’ has been breaking records all season and has recently been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month for March and Champions League Player of the Week awards.
“They’re both in the form of their life and it’s very, very difficult to separate. But two very different players,” Gerrard concluded.
Before facing one another once again in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, Salah and Liverpool will face Everton in the Merseyside Derby on April 7. Meanwhile, De Bruyne and Manchester City can be named Premier League Champions if they beat Manchester United on April 7 in the Manchester Derby.
