VIDEO: Al Masry grab crucial away goal in draw with CF Mounana

Egypt representative Al Masry and of Gabon played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Play-off round.

The Green Eagles qualified for this round after eliminating each of Zambia’s Green Buffaloes and Tanzania’s Simba, while Mounana were knocked out from the CAF Champions League by Al Ahly.

Al Masry gained an early advantage when Ahmed Gomaa’s strike found the back of the net after only 13 minutes, silencing the home crowd.

Mounana pushed for an equaliser, but Al Masry’s defence and goalkeeper Ahmed Masoud managed to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Two minutes into the second-half, Issouf Ouattara had a chance to double his side’s lead, but couldn’t connect to Mohamed Shatta’s cross. The hosts punished them, scoring the equaliser after an error from Ahmed Masoud.

Substitutes Aristide Bancé and Islam Eissa had two chances to snatch an away win, but they couldn’t find the back of the next, taking home a 1-1 draw.

The return-leg will take place Wednesday, April 18, and a 0-0 draw will be enough for the Egyptian side to qualify for the group stages.

The Confederation Cup is Al Masry’s only chance of lifting silverware this season after being knocked out of the Egypt Cup by Wadi Degla as well as losing the league and the Super Cup to Al Ahly.

The Port-Said based club is the only Egyptian club remaining in the competition as Zamalek were eliminated in the first round after a surprising defeat to Ethiopian minnows Welayta Dicha.
