Egypt international right back spoke about his start with the national team, World Cup qualifications journey and Egypt’s chances in Russia.

Omar Gaber, who recently joined the new Major League Soccer club on a season-long loan from Swiss side Basel, where he struggled for game time, is expected to be part of Hector Cuper’s World Cup squad as the Argentinan coach always included the 25-year-old in Egypt’s squad in the World Cup qualifications and the 2017 African Cup of Nations.

Gaber recalled the dramatic match against Congo in the qualifiers, and how it’s hard for him to forget the feeling he had after Congo scored an equalizer in the last minutes of the game before ’s last-gasp penalty guided the team to their first World Cup in almost three decades.

“I was on the bench at that time and after they scored a goal I started talking with my teammates about alternative scenarios,” Gaber told MBC Mast TV channel. “At the same time, we had hope that we can still win the game because we fought very hard.”

“Salah was under a lot of pressure and stress but he managed to surpass all that,” he said. “Salah is one of the top five players in the world right now.”

When asked about Egypt’s chances in Russia, Gaber said that he thinks his team can reach the semi-finals. The former Zamalek player believes that the national team will secure more than five points during the first round as they play against hosts Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group A.

“Germany, Egypt, Brazil and Spain will manage to reach the semi-finals,” he added. “I believe Germany and Brazil will reach the final match and Brazil win the trophy. But Egypt can win bronze.”
