Arsene Wenger ‘surprised’ by Mohamed Elneny’s red card
The Egypt international started against Southampton and played 90 minutes, before he was controversially sent-off after pushing Cédric Soares.
He becomes the fourth Egyptian to receive a red card in the Premier League after Ahmed Hossam Mido, Ahmed Elmohamady, and Hossam Ghaly.
“I haven’t seen what happened with Jack [Wilshere, who received a yellow],” Wenger said in his post-match press conference.
“With Elneny I was surprised, he’s a fair player. Whether he’s touched the player in his face I don’t know, I think it’s accidental. We will look tomorrow and see if we have fair grounds for an appeal.”
The straight red card means that he will miss Arsenal’s upcoming three league games against each of Newcastle United, West Ham, and Manchester United.
Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League with 54 points and their next game will be against CSKA Moscow in the return-leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
