I play for the team, says Mohamed Salah following Man City win
Egypt international and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has revealed his delight following his side’s qualification for the Champions League semi-finals.
The Egyptian played the full 90 minutes and scored an early second-half goal which killed the tie, before Roberto Firmino scored Liverpool’s second of the game to secure a memorable win at the Etihad Stadium.
The Egypt international has been phenomenal for Liverpool, scoring 39 goals and providing 13 assists in only 44 games across all competitions.
He is currently leading the Premier League Golden Boot race and is tying with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the race for Europe’s Golden Shoe.
“I think the [his] goal was at a good time for us because they were pressing very high and had many chances, so in the beginning we struggled a little bit because they scored in the first two minutes,” Salah told BT Sport.
“After that we came back, we played hard and we got the result – that’s the most important thing,” he added.
With his goal against Manchester City, Salah became the first Premier League player to be directly involved in fifty goals across all competitions this season.
“I’ve changed my position many times, but in the end we play as a team. We play as 11 players and everyone gives 100 per cent, so we are happy about the result,” Salah continued.
“I’ve said many times that I play for the team and I try to score each game to try to help the team to win the games. That’s the most important thing for me.”
Liverpool secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 10 years, when they knocked out Arsenal 5-3 on aggregate, before losing 4-3 to Chelsea in the semis.
Salah will be hoping to become the only second Arab to lift the Champions League title after Algeria’s Rabah Madjer, who won it with FC Porto against Bayern Munich in 1987.
