Sam Morsy’s Wigan Athletic secure top three League One spot
Sam Morsy’s Wigan Athletic have confirmed their top three finish this season in a bid to promotion to the Championship.
After the Latics’ 4-1 win away at Rochdale, Morsy’s side have cemented their position as league leaders with 86 points. It is now impossible for fourth placed Rotherham United, 69 points, to reach the top two spots held by Wigan and Blackburn Rovers [both equal on 86 points].
Wigan have six more games to play this season, while Blackburn Rovers have one less game. They face Rotherham United on the 14th of April.
The top two positions in the league gain automatic qualification to the Championship while the next four teams feature in the play-offs to decide the third team accompanying the top two.
As things stand, Burton, Sunderland and Barnsley are facing the drop from the Championship.
Despite getting loaned out to the Championship with the Tykes for the second half of the 2016/17 season, Sam Morsy has been in scintillating form for the club this campaign, being named their permanent captain last summer after fending away interest from Championship clubs to fight for promotion with Wigan Athletic.
Sam Morsy has been a permanent feature for Egypt manager Hector Cuper’s squad for the better half of his stint as manager of the Pharaohs and is expected to be on the plane heading to Russia.
