Mohamed Salah helps Liverpool achieve feat last done a decade ago
Egypt international Mohamed Salah has helped Liverpool achieve a feat in the UEFA Champions League last done 10 years ago.
Salah’s season keeps getting better. After qualifying to the FIFA World Cup with Egypt last October, leading the way for the European Golden Boot, becoming the joint-top African goalscorer in a single English Premier league season, he became the first Egyptian in history to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool have endured a turbulent time on Europe’s biggest stage. They last reached the semi-final of the competition exactly 10 seasons ago.
The Reds enjoyed mixed fortunes since 2005 when they won the competition. Despite a group stages exit a year later, the club managed to reach the final in 2007 but lost at the hands of AC Milan.
One season later they managed to reach the semi-final but were eliminated by fellow Premier league outfits Chelsea, losing 4-3 on aggregate.
Since 2008, not even Fernando Torres or Luis Suarez could lead the club to this advanced stage in the competition. The most they’ve managed to achieve is a quarter-final berth in 2009. Since 2009, the club qualified to the Champions League twice where they got knocked out from the group stages in 2009/10 and 2014/15.
Salah will be hoping to take it a step further to become the second Egyptian to play a European championship final after Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’, who played the 2004 UEFA Cup final as his club Marseille was defeated by Valencia.
Salah was on target in both legs of Liverpool’s successful victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. They will now face one of either AS Roma, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semis.
