VIDEO: Al Ahly advance to Egypt Cup quarters with 2-0 win over Dakhleya
Al Ahly were paired with Dakhleya after smashing Telephonat Beni Suef 5-0 in the round of 32 in November, while Dakhleya overcame Al Nasr 1-0 to reach the round of 16.
Dakhleya had a fierce start to the game, however, none of their attempts were threatening enough to the title holder’s net.
On the 15-minute mark, Mido Gaber ran solo towards the goal and tried to chip the ball over the keeper to score the opener for the Red Castle but the ball went wide. The Red Devils had another dangerous chance as Marwan Mohsen almost headed in the ball from a close range, but he was denied by the Dakhleya keeper.
The first half ended goalless as both sides had their chances but lacked quality, with Al Ahly’s attempts being more threatening.
Al Ahly continued to dominate and 13 minutes after the restart Amr El-Sulaya almost broke the deadlock. The 29-year-old midfielder fired a shot from long distance, but it deflected off one of the defenders before hitting the upper part of the right post.
Fifteen minutes after his attempt, El-Sulaya found Junior Ajayi’s pass and tried another time from distance and successfully slotted the ball into the top right corner of the net to give the Red Devils the lead.
With around seven minutes left into the game, Islam Mohareb played a beautiful one-two with Ajayi, which ended with the former skipping past two defenders inside the box and curling the ball into the back of the net.
Following the victory, Al Ahly continue their bid to win the domestic double for the second season in a row. Their next game, however, will be against Wadi Degla in the 32nd round of the Egyptian Premier League, which they already sealed its title, on April 17.
