Elneny sets new personal record after CSKA Moscow masterclass
Egypt and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has set a new record for himself in Europe after his scintillating performance for the Gunners against CSKA Moscow.
Elneny made the difference as Arsenal survived a scare after going 2-0 down against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
The 25-year-old provided two assists to bring Arsenal level, the first one an intelligent pass after a one-two with Danny Welbeck to split the defence and send the Englishman through on goal, while the second came after the Russians were caught on the counter and Ramsey was sent through on goal to score.
After his brace of assists, Elneny became the first Egyptian to provide two assists in a European game after no other than Mohamed Salah, who did it in November 2012 for FC Basel against Sporting Clube de Portugal.
One a more personal record, Elneny provided two assists in the same game for the first time in his European journey after 220 matches played in all competitions. He will now hope to succeed in becoming the second Egyptian in history to play in the Europa League final after Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’ did it in 2004 with Olimpique Marseille.
Mohamed Elneny was nominated for the Europa League player of the round after his masterclass performance against CSKA. Prior to this game, Elneny had completed 647 passes with 91% accuracy in the competition, more than any other player.
He was recently awarded with a contract extension after joining the Gunners in January 2016.
