OFFICIAL: Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy to miss World Cup

Egypt and Zamalek goalkeeper will not take part in the in Russia after his anterior cruciate ligament injury was confirmed.

The goalkeeper got injured during Zamalek’s game against Ittihad of Alexandria in the Premier League, which forced the coach to replace him with Mahmoud Genesh.

“I am thankful for everything. I am suffering an ACL injury,” the goalie said on his official Twitter account. “I will fly to Germany to finish needed medical tests and the know the extent of the injury.”

Before the medical results came out, the goalkeeper Zamalek’s medical staff suspected that the player is suffering an ACL injury. He will now miss the rest of the season with the White Knights and will not join the Egyptian national team in Russia.

“I want to thank god for everything and ask you to pray for me. Good luck to my club Zamalek and their amazing fans, the Egyptian national team in the World Cup and to my family and the people of Portsaid,” he concluded.

El-Shennawy made 28 appearances for the national team, in addition to playing before with the Egyptian Olympic and youth teams. He was expected to compete with El-Hadary and Mohamed El-Sehnnawy for the starting spot in the World Cup.
