VIDEO: El-Shahat scores as Al Ain qualify for Champions League round of 16
Egypt international Hussien El-Shahat has scored his first Asian Champions League goal against Al-Rayyan, guiding Al Ain to the round of 16.
Qatari side Al-Rayyan hosted Al Ain in the final round of the AFC Champions League group stages, with a draw being enough for Al Ain to qualify for the next round.
The Emirati side got off to a flying start, when El-Shahat opened the scoreline after only 11 minutes. Caio’s shot was parried, before the Egyptian tapped in the rebound.
The goal took El-Shahat’s tally to eight goals and 12 assists across all competitions, as the Egyptian is nominated for Gulf League Player of the Year award.
Abdulrahman doubled his side’s lead in the 55th minutes and three minutes Marcus Berg scored Al Ain’s third, before scoring his second of the game in 78th minute, making it 4-0.
Qatar all-time top scorer Sebastián Soria pulled one back for the home side in the 85th minute, but it was too little too late, as the game finished 4-1 to Al Ain.
The win secured Al Ain’s qualification to the round of 16 alongside Esteghlal of Iran, while Al Rayyan finished the group in third place, four points above bottom-placed Al Hilal.
