Egypt goalkeeping coach Ahmed Nagy hints Ekramy return
Nagy did not include Al Ahly’s goalie in his four picks that represented the Pharaohs in the past friendlies as part of the preparations for the World Cup. However, Zamalek’s Ahmed El-Shennawy recently suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which might lead to giving Ekramy a chance to join the team in Russia.
“Ekramy returning to the national team is something natural, he is an experienced international goalkeeper,” Nagy said in radio comments.
The coach also said that he spoke to El-Shennawy after his injury wishing him a quick recovery and told him that he will be the first player to go to Russia as he was part of the team since the start.
“Although the idea of having four goalkeepers in the squad was not welcomed, El-Shennawy’s injury proved the importance of having an additional goalkeeper who adapts to the atmosphere before the World Cup,” he added. “There will surely be four goalkeepers in the next period.”
Ekramy was expected to take part in Al Ahly’s clash against Wadi Degla on Tuesday, but head coach Hossam El-Badry decided to start the game with Aly Lotfy.
The goalie made his debut with the national team in 2006 and represented Egypt in 22 games. His last game with the team was during the World Cup qualifiers when Egypt faced Ghana.
