VIDEO: Al Masry qualify for CAF Confederation Cup group stages
Al Masry have managed to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages after beating Gabon’s CF Mounana in the playoffs.
The Port Said-based club played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Gabon, before winning 2-1 at home to secure their qualification to the group stages.
The first-half saw Al Masry missing a handful of opportunities and wasting numerous chances through Aristide Bancé, Ahmed Shokry, and Islam Issa.
In the 59th minute, defender Mohamed Koffi finally broke the deadlock. Islam Issa swung in a free-kick and Koffi converted it with a header, making it 1-0.
Only six minutes later, Louis Autchanga equalised for Mounana, before Islam Issa’s cross was deflected in for an own goal by Mounana defender in the 75th minute.
Al Masry players managed to hold on to their lead in the remaining minutes, as they secured a 3-2 aggregate win and qualified for the group stages for the first time in their history.
The Port-Said based club is the only Egyptian club remaining in the competition as Zamalek were eliminated in the first round after a surprising defeat to Ethiopian minnows Welayta Dicha.
