VIDEO: Azaro’s goal makes the difference in Al Ahly win over Wadi Degla
Gameweek 32 of the Egyptian Premier League saw the return of Walid Azaro for Al Ahly, and the Moroccan made good by scoring the decisive goal against Wadi Degla at Cairo Stadium.
Al Ahly XI: Ali Lotfy; Mohamed Hany, Ayman Ashraf, Saad Samir, Sabry Raheel; El-Sulaya, Hesham Mohamed, Ahmed Hamdy; Mido Gaber, Ajayi; Azaro
Al Ahly clinched their 40th league title last month, but after being held to a 0-0 draw against Smouha in their last league match, the Red Devils were looking to get back on track. Meanwhile, Wadi Degla are in a tough relegation fight, sitting just four points above the relegation line before the start of the match.
Mido Gaber had a good chance in the fifth minute after his shot brushed just past the post.
Al Ahly goalkeeper Ali Lotfi, who started the game while Sherif Ekramy remained on the bench, denied El-Sayed Salem’s effort from outside the area in the 15th minute.
However, it was to be returnee Walid Azaro to score the only goal of the match in the 28th minute after he broke through from a Junior Ajayi pass to be one-on-one with the keeper.
The goal keeps Azaro atop the goal-scoring charts in the league with 18 goals to his name. Azaro also became the highest scoring foreigner ever in the Egyptian Premier League, surpassing the previous record of 17 set by former Ahly striker Flavio and former Ismaily man John Utaka.
Wadi Degla never seriously threatened Al Ahly despite the narrow margin, but 16th placed Tanta also dropped points and allowed Wadi Degla to remain four points clear of the relegation zone.
Al Ahly next play Petrojet in the league, before their clash against rivals Zamalek on April 26. They start the CAF Champions League group stage next month and continue in the quarter-final of the Egypt Cup. Wadi Degla next play El Entag El Harby in the league.
