Zamalek extend winless run to four games with draw against Contractors
Zamalek were held to a 0-0 draw by Arab Contractors on Wednesday to extend their winless run in the Egyptian Premier League to four games.
This marked Zamalek’s first game under the leadership of interim coach Khaled Galal, who took over after the sacking of Ehab Galal.
The draw leaves Contractors in 11th place on the league table with only 38 points, while Zamalek are third on 55 points, three ahead of fourth-placed Al Masry who have four games in hand. This gives the Port Said-based side an advantage in their race for the CAF Confederation Cup spot.
Meanwhile, Ismaily secured the second CAF Champions League spot after beating Misr El-Makkasa 2-1 to join league champions Al Ahly in Africa’s top-tier competition next season.
The White Knights, who were looking to return to winning ways, had a number of chances to take the lead but lacked the final touch.
Congolese forward Kabongo Kasongo seemed to have given Zamalek the lead after six minutes only, however, his goal was ruled out for an offside. Around the half hour mark, the Congolese forward had another chance to open the scoring but was denied by keeper Hassan Shahin.
Kasongo continued to waste chances early in the second half before he made way for Ghanaian forward Nana Poku in the 68th minute.
In the 78th minute, Mohamed Antar’s shot was saved by the Contractors keeper and substitute Nana Poku’s effort from the rebound went off target.
Despite getting a host of goal scoring chances throughout the game, Zamalek failed to capitalise as the match ended goalless.
