VIDEO: Samir, Mohsen score as Al Ahly defeat Petrojet 2-1

Ahly defeat Petrojet
Goals from Saad Samir and Marwan Mohsen guided Al Ahly to a 2-1 victory over Petrojet in the 33rd gameweek of the Egyptian Premier League.

Al Ahly’s starting lineup at the Suez Stadium saw slight changes as manager Hossam El-Badry rested Nigerian forward Junior Ajayi in preparation for the Cairo derby on Thursday and the Cup quarter-final game with Assiouty Sport. He also excluded Mohamed El-Shennawy from the starting line-up to give veteran keeper Sherif Ekramy more game time.

The Egyptian champions wasted a chance to take an early lead as Al Ahly youngster Ahmed Hamdy’s effort was denied by Petrojet keeper and the rebound hit the bar.

Only after 15 minutes into the game, record-breaker Walid Azaro was forced off with injury and was replaced by Marwan Mohsen.

Midway through the first half, defender Saad Samir put the Red Devils in front. Walid Soliman’s free-kick found Samir, who headed home to give Al Ahly a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

The Red Devils had a number of chances to double their lead in the rest of the first half but lacked the finishing touch as they headed into half time at 1-0.

Seven minutes into the second half, Islam Mohareb came on to replace Hesham Mohamed as Al Ahly maintained their domination. Three minutes later, substitute Mohsen collected Walid Soliman’s through pass before netting Al Ahly’s second goal of the night.

Mohsen’s goal helped Al Ahly become the highest ever scoring team in one league campaign in Egypt with 72 goals, beating Tersana’s record from the 1960s.

Less than 10 minutes after assisting Al Ahly’s second goal, Soliman was replaced by Mohamed Sherif.

With 12 minutes to go, Petrojet’s Omar Al Nagdy pulled one back for his side as he beat his marker Saad Samir and scored after going one-on-one with keeper Sherif Ekramy.

The victory took league champions Al Ahly to 85 points, while Petrojet are 12th on 38 points. Al Ahly’s next encounter will be the Cairo Derby against Zamalek on Thursday, while the petroleum side will play their last game in the league campaign against Entag El-Harby on Friday.
