winger Mahmoud Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ has recounted ’s road in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and how he had mixed feelings during the final 30 minutes in the decisive game against Congo.

Trezeguet has been a major element in the lineup of Egypt coach Hector Cuper since he become at the helm of the team. The 23-year-old has appeared in six games out of six in the qualifiers with Egypt.

Al Ahly youth product elaborated how tremendous it is for him to play the World Cup, mentioning that his father’s will gave him an extra motive.

“[Playing in the World Cup] is a dream that I have courted since I was a child, it is the biggest stage in the World Cup. Any player would just wish to play in. I have worked hard to get this chance and what boosted my desire is my father’s will who hoped that I contribute to Egypt’s qualification to the World Cup. I hoped that he would witness my achievement with the national team but what makes me proud I fulfilled his wish,” Trezeguet told FIFA.com.

“Competition in Africa is never easy anymore. In each national team gathering we spoke that we can’t squander this chance. Honestly at first it looked like making the World Cup is a far-fetched target but with tolerance and hard work we knew that we can achieve the long-awaited dream for Egyptians.”

“After the draw between Congo and Ghana we knew our game against Congo would be a tough one. They had nothing to lose, and that’s indeed what happened. Salah scored the first goal and we had to capitalize on that lead and get a second. But we conceded the equaliser two minutes away from full time. We regained our determination and shouted in each others in order to not give up. We pressed high on Congo until I got tripped inside the box to get the penalty which Salah converted and that decided the qualification in our favour.”

Egypt have been drawn in the World Cup’s Group A alongside the hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. The Pharaohs will begin their campaign facing Uruguay.

“Without a doubt it is a tough group. Russia will be backed by the fact that they are the hosts. Uruguay are former champions and their team possess great champions, while our match against Saudi Arabia will be like a derby. We have to reach the competition fearing nobody.”

“With the arrival of Cuper I got my first chance with the national team and I hanged on it. He is a manager who respects who spends effort on the pitch whether in training or games and the importance of being tactically disciplined. I would like to thank him for the confidence he has in me and I pledge to maintain performing on high level and to improve even more.”

Trezeguet has starred for Kasimpasa this season in the Turkish league, scoring 11 goals and making four assists. The Turkish side had recently activated his buy-out clause from his club Anderlecht.

“It was a hard decision to leave Al Ahly but I think it was the right decision to take at that time. After the lack of playing time at Anderlecht I went to another Belgian club Mouscron then Kasimpasa. I was criticised for going to Turkey but my goal was to prove myself and thank God, I think that with the season coming to an end my numbers speak for themselves. This is the fruit of hard work.”
