Ian Wright talks up Salah’s Ballon d’Or chances
Former Arsenal player Ian Wright believes that Mohamed Salah can compete with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the Ballon d’Or if he manages to win the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool this season.
Mohamed Salah’s heroic performance in the semi-final first leg game against AS Roma led the Reds to thrash the Italian side 5-2 moving one step closer to the Champions League final.
Wright said that Salah needs to win the Champions League with Liverpool to be able to compete for the prestigious award.
“Salah is in that conversation, of course he is. With the World Cup coming in, the form he is you’d like to think he’ll keep that for the World Cup,” he told Sky Sports podcast the Debate.
The Pharaoh is drawing huge attention every day and especially after winning the PFA Player of the Year award. He scored a total of 43 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions since his return to England.
“Obviously depending on what Liverpool do in the Champions League, if they do go on and win it, then you have to say when you look at Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s saved much of his best work for the Champions League,” Wright added.
“Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or a couple of times, and not just for those reasons but if Mo Salah keeps on doing what he’s doing, he’s not only in the conversation, he’s got a very good chance of winning it,” the pundit said.
