Shikabala’s Al-Raed edge towards safety after beating Al-Kawkab
Al-Raed defeated Al-Kawkab 4-1 in the first leg of the Saudi Pro League relegation play-offs at The Jewel Stadium on Friday.
The bottom two teams in the Saudi Pro League table face two teams in the second division as they compete for two spots in the top-tier next season. Al-Raed, who finished the league in the 13th place, were drawn against Al-Kawkab who finished fourth in the Saudi second division.
Egypt international Mahmoud Abdel-Razik Shikabala was included in the starting line up, and was subbed off six minutes from time for Riad Al-Ibrahim, while Egypt’s Mohamed Atwa played the full 90 minutes.
Ismael Bangoura gave the hosts an early lead after converting from the spot in the 11th minute. Two minutes after the break, Saleh Al-Shehri doubled Al-Raed’s lead before Sengalese forward Mignane Diouf pulled one back for the guests around the hour mark.
However, Al Raed continued to push for more goals aiming to get a comfortable result ahead of the away game. Brazilian forward Edison Tarabai made it 3-1 for Al-Raed with 18 minutes to go before Issam Erraki scored another penalty in the dying minutes of the game.
Al-Raed sealed a 4-1 victory to edge closer to safety ahead of the second leg of the play-offs, which is set to be held on May 4.
