Wigan captain Sam Morsy speaks after promotion
Egypt international Sam Morsy expressed his happiness after Wigan Athletic managed to seal promotion to the Championship assuring that winning a League One title would be the cherry on top for him and the team this season.
The club’s captain and his teammates were recently promoted to the EPL Championship after defeating Fleetwood Town 4-0. The Latics are now close to winning the League One title as they are currently leading the race with 94 points after 44 rounds while competitors Blackburn Rovers are only one point away in second place.
“As captain, the aim at the start of the season is to lift the title,” Morsy said. “There are highs and lows along the way but trophies are what it’s all about and we’re within touching distance.”
The promotion is Sam Morsy’s second one with Wigan after the Egypt international managed to clinch the 2015-2016 League One title in his debut season with the Latics.
“From the start of the season, we set out to win promotion and to win the title. So far it’s been a perfect season and it’s gone just how we hoped it would, with the added bonus of the FA Cup run.”
Wigan had unexpectedly defeated Premier League leaders Manchester City 1-0 and qualified to the FA Cup quarter-final but lost 0-2 to Southampton.
“It’s so pleasing to get delighted in emphatic fashion, and we’ve not had to rely on any other teams for favors,” he added. “We’ve hit form at the right time, the pitches are good and suiting our style,” he said.
Wigan’s next game will be against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, April 28 at Wigan’s home ground DW Stadium.
“It’s always brilliant to get promoted,” Morsy explained. “The manager here’s got a vision, you can see what he wants to do, and it’s worked.
The Latics were only relegated last season when they finished 23rd in the Championship, but it took them just one season to seal automatic promotion to the second tier.
“The last time we went up, a number of errors were made. But the gaffer is very shrewd, he’s got a number of promotions under his belt, he’ll know what to do,” he concluded.
