Ali Maaloul scheduled to be fit to face Esperance
Tunisian left back Ali Maaloul is scheduled to make his Al Ahly return on Friday in the CAF Champions League group stage opener with Esperance, although he remains out for the midweek tie against Assiouty.
The 28 year old was originally ruled out for three weeks following an ankle sprain, leading him to miss a run of games that included a 0-0 draw against Smouha and a 2-1 loss against bitter rivals Zamalek, in the White Knights’ first league win over Al Ahly in 11 years.
Having spent a month on the sidelines, Maaloul is scheduled to return against an Esperance side that boasts several members of the Al Ahly player’s national team including Khalil Chemmam, Moez Ben Cherifia and Taha Yassine Khenissi. Maaloul will be hoping to add to his impressive tally of five assists in 16 games this season for Al Ahly against the Tunisian giants.
Maaloul’s time out means that he also only has three club games to regain fitness before getting his first taste of the FIFA World Cup in a tough group alongside Belgium, England and Panama, with the Carthage Eagles attempting to make it past the group stage for the first time at the fifth time of asking.
Following his return against Esperance on Friday 4th of May, Maaloul will be able to pick up some minutes in Uganda against KCCA in the CAF Champions League, before the last Egpytian Premier League game of the season against Al Masry.
