Roma boss Di Francesco singles out Salah ahead of return leg
AS Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco assured that his team will not be directing all their efforts towards marking Liverpool winger and top scorer Mohamed Salah during their second leg clash in the UEFA Champions League.
Mohamed Salah stood tall after scoring two goals against Roma in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final and made two assists helping Liverpool secure a 5-2 win that will ease their mission in the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.
The Reds’ goal-scoring machine will be causing a headache to Di Francesco as his side are aiming to overturn a three-goal deficit and cannot afford to concede more goals in the second leg.
“Salah made the difference in the first leg,” the Italian coach said in a news conference before the game. “But we can’t change our whole team. We need to have better mechanisms.
“What is important is that Salah is a little player on the counter and touching the vertical spaces, but we can’t have three players on him. That wouldn’t be reasonable.”
“We need to focus on the rivals, but, first of all, on ourselves if we want to score three goals,” he added pointing out Roma’s strong attacking ambitions.
Roma will need to repeat their fascinating comeback in the quarter-final against Barcelona recovering from a 4-1 loss to a 3-0 victory at Stadio Olimpico if they want to proceed to the final match.
“We need to stay as focused as possible if we are to complete this comeback. I would like to make something clear, we are about to play a Champions League semifinal in front of 70,000 people, do you expect us to sit back? No.
“You have to expect a fighting team, you want to see a team battling on the pitch regardless of the score. What I expect is enthusiasm, passion and desire to go past this hurdle tomorrow,” he said.
