president Gianni Infantino has proposed holding a new tournament that would be played every two years between eight countries.

According to Reuters, Infantino suggested in a letter that the tournament, named the Final 8, would take place every October and/or November of every odd year starting from 2021.

The letter mentions that there’s a solid and serious group of investors who are ready to spend $25 billion on the competition as well as a modified version of the Club World Cup, which would also start in 2021 with 24 teams.

The number of teams from each region was not specified in the letter and before this becomes official, the members of FIFA’s decision-making Council would need to approve it.

In case this tournament was approved, the Confederations Cup which takes place every four years will be cancelled.

The new competition could be played in the same time as the European Championship, Copa America, and African Nations Cup, plus the World Cup qualifying stages, which would draw a lot of criticism towards FIFA.
