Arsenal knocked out of Europa League by Atletico Madrid
Mohamed Elneny missed through injury as Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League semi-final after losing to Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate.
After claiming a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg late in April, the La Liga side defeated the Gunners 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Thursday to advance to the competition’s final.
Diego Costa scored the game’s only goal just before half-time to end Arsenal’s hopes of lifting European silverware. Antoine Griezmann sent a low pass to Costa, who went into the box before lifting his shot over David Ospina.
Arsenal didn’t give up and had an opportunity to level the tie just few minutes after the break, however, Aaron Ramsey failed to convert after going through on goal. The Premier League side wasted a number of other chances throughout the second half as Atletico sealed their spot in the final, where they’ll be looking to add their third title, after clinching it in 2010 and 2012.
Atletico will face Marseille in the final, which is scheduled to take place in Lyon on May 16, after the French side scored an extra-time goal to beat RB Salzburg 3-2 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, the defeat means that Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title to take part in the UEFA Champions League next season have vanished.
