Puyol: Comparing Salah to Messi, Ronaldo sort of exaggeration
Barcelona legend Carles Puyol has played down comparisons between Liverpool hero Mohamed Salah and Barcelona and Real Madrid icons, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, saying that it is a bit of exaggeration at the time being.
Salah played a major role in his team’s Champions League campaign this season that saw them reach the final for the first time since 2007, where the Egypt international became the first Egyptian player to achieve that milestone.
In addition to that, Salah has been experiencing a stellar season on personal level as he is the current Premier League top scorer with 31 goals and has 43 goals in all competitions.
“I think that comparing Salah with Messi and Ronaldo at the moment is a sort of exaggeration. It is true that he is delivering a fantastic season and is scoring a lot of goals but Ballon d’Or is an individual award and collective accolades have a big weight,” the former Spain captain told ON Sport.
“It also depends on whether Liverpool win the Champions League or not, besides Salah’s performance in the World Cup. If either Cristiano or Messi triumph the World Cup the competition will be even harder. Personally I do not believe this is a fair way of judgement and I see that Ballon d’Or belongs to the best player apart from the trophies he claim.”
“Salah and Messi are very different. Salah is so fast, hard to stop and scores a ton of goals but Messi is from another planet.”
Puyol concluded his talk about Salah stating that his brilliant season and winning the Champions League would undoubtedly grant him a shot for the Ballon d’Or.
The 2010 world champion have also expressed his view on Egypt’s chances in the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“I don’t think Egypt is one of the favourites for the World Cup but they have a very good group of players that could take them to the next round, we will see what will happen.”
