El-Shahat features as Al Ain edge Al Wasl to seal domestic double
Hussein El-Shahat featured as Al Ain earned a 2-1 win over Al Wasl to claim the UAE President’s Cup title on Thursday.
The Egypt international had scored a goal in the semi-final of the competition, which saw Al Ain thrash Shabab Al Ahli 6-0 late in April.
Al Ain got off to a strong start at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium and earned an early lead as midfielder Ismail Ahmed scored off a corner kick in the third minute.
The league champions started the second half in a similar manner as they doubled their lead five minutes after the restart. Swedish forward Marcus Berg netted Al Ain’s second goal off a perfect through pass from Omar Abdulrahman.
With 20 minutes to go, El-Shahat left the field to be replaced by Rayan Yaslam. Five minutes later, Al Ain were reduced to 10 men as goalscorer Ismail Ahmed was sent off.
Brazilian-born forward Caio scored a last-minute goal for Al Wasl to reduce the deficit, but it was too late to make a comeback as Al Ain won their seventh UAE President’s Cup title in history.
El-Shahat has now won the domestic double less than five months after joining the UAE Arabian Gulf League side from Egyptian Premier League side Misr El-Makassa during the winter transfer window.
