Phakamani Mahlambi, Al Assiouty duo called up for COSAFA Cup
The COSAFA Cup is an annual tournament organized by Council of Southern Africa Football Associations for the Southern African national teams.
This year’s tournament will be the 18th edition and will be hosted by South Africa, with Zambia, hosts South Africa, and title holders Zimbabwe are considered favourites for the title. The tournament will take place from May 27 until June 9.
The first round consists of two groups of eight teams, with only the group winners qualify for the quarter-finals, where Zambia, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, South Africa, and Zimbabwe will start their campaign.
Namibia, who will face 2012 AFCON winners Zambia in the quarters, have called up Al Assiouty forward Benson Shilongo for the tournament.
The 25-year-old has been on fire for Al Assiouty this season, scoring five in 14 games, guiding them for the Egypt Cup semi-finals.
Meanwhile, South Africa will face the winners of group A, which include Comoros, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Seychelles.
The Bafana Bafana announced their 34-man squad, which included Al Ahly’s Phakamani Mahlambi and Gift Links of Al Assiouty.
Phakamani Mahlambi joined Al Ahly last summer and has scored one goal while assisting five in 14 games in all competitions, while winter signing Links made 12 appearances for Al Assiouty, assisting only once.
