Smouha beat Al Assiouty on penalties to reach Egypt Cup final

Smouha defeated at Borg El-Arab to reach their second ever final, where they will meet Zamalek.

In a repeat of the 2014 Egypt Cup final, Smouha will meet Zamalek in the cup final, and they will go in search of their first ever major trophy.

Smouha reached the semi-finals after beating Wadi Degla on penalties, while Al Assiouty knocked out title holders Al Ahly 1-0.

After a dull first-half, the Alexandrian side broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute through former Egypt international Ahmed Temsah, whose long-range strike beat Al Assiouty keeper Ahmed Dadour.

In the dying minutes of the game, Namibia international Benson Shilongo was tackled by Smouha keeper El-Mahdy Soliman, and the Namibian stepped up and scored the penalty, taking the game to extra time.

Both sides failed to score in the extra time, and Smouha snatched a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory after Benson Shilongo and Ahmed Said Okka missed their penalties.

It is the second time in the history of the Egypt Cup that two sides face each other in the final, with Zamalek coming out on top in 2014 thanks to Hazem Emam’s late winner.

The Egypt Cup final will take place on Tuesday, May 15 at the Borg El-Arab stadium, and both sides will be looking to win the title to rescue their disappointing season.
