Following a great season in which he led to the Championship and won the League One title, head coach renewed his contract with the team.

One season after they were relegated, Egypt international Sam Morsy and his teammates were able to seal the League One title and secure promotion for the Latics.

Cook, who also led his team to the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals after defeating three Premier League sides including the Champions Manchester City, signed a new four-year contract to stay at Wigan until the end of the 2021/22.

“I have loved every minute of my time here,” said the 51-year-old coach. “It has been a huge team effort and I couldn’t have achieved anything here without the support of our chairman David Sharpe, chief executive Jonathan Jackson, my coaching staff, all the staff across the club and the players.”

“It was always going to be a big challenge to win promotion immediately but a lot of hard work and endeavor has gone in from so many people, who can all look back on the past year with great pride.

“Our supporters have been incredible, from the first day I arrived I couldn’t have been more welcome and I look forward to seeing everyone back at the DW next season,” he added.

The Latics chairman David Sharpe expressed his happiness after Cook renewed his contract saying that he has been the main reason behind the club’s success this year.
