Mohamed Salah wins Premier League Golden Boot
Mohamed Salah has been confirmed as the Premier League Golden Boot winner for the 2017-18 season, having scored 32 goals in his debut Liverpool season.
Despite going on what is by his standards a goal drought of two games, Salah has finished the season as the top scorer with the most goals in the Premier League era, bettering the previous record of 31 goals held jointly by Cristiano Ronaldo (2007-08) and Luis Suarez (2013-14).
Salah has also achieved some landmarks in winning the award. The 25-year-old is the first African player to win the Golden Boot since Ivory Coast icon Didier Drogba, who won the award on two occasions in 2006-07 and 2009-10 respectively.
The last player to score more goals than Salah was before the rebranding of the Premier League when it was still known as the First Division, with the player in question being Clive Allen of Tottenham in 1986-87 when he netted 33 times.
Salah wins the award in spite of Harry Kane’s best efforts, with the England international just three goals behind Salah headed into the final matchday of the season.
As well as his goalscoring exploits in the Premier League, Salah has carried his form into the Champions League and as a result, the Egyptian has scored more goals in all competitions than any Liverpool player since Ian Rush in 1983-84 when the Reds went on to win a First Division and European Cup double.
Egypt’s superstar will be hoping to continue his European form to emulate Rush and win the Champions League as Liverpool travel to Kiev to take on back to back holders Real Madrid, in a rematch of the 1981 European Cup final which Liverpool won 1-0.
