Cúper justifies exclusion of Hussein El-Shahat from World Cup squad
The reserves included Entag El-Harby keeper Amer Amer, Al Ahly’s Walid Soliman and Hossam Ashour, Assiouty Sport’s Hamada Tolba, Momen Zakaria and Amr Gamal who are on loan at Ahli Jeddah and HJK Helsinki, respectively.
The six players will not travel with the national team but could be called up in case of injuries.
“The exclusion of Hussein El-Shahat came in order to include another player, this is football,” Cúper said during his press conference on Monday.
“The technical staff always try to take into account some of the needs and criteria in its choices.
“Including El-Shahat in the squad would have required the exclusion of one of Mahmoud Trezeguet, Ramadan Sobhi, Amr Warda, or Mohamed Salah.
“Another important question is whether the player called-up will respond to our playing style or not,” he added.
The Pharaohs’ training camp will kick off on May 22 and they will face the Kuwaiti national team on May 26 in Kuwait before playing Colombia and Belgium on June 1 and June 6 before the World Cup.
They will then travel to Russia on June 10, five days before their opening game against Uruguay.
Egypt, who were drawn in Group A, will face hosts Russia on June 19 and will play their final group game against Saudi Arabia on June 25.
