Egypt WC opponents: Uruguay name preliminary squad
Two-time world champions Uruguay have been drawn in group A alongside Egypt, hosts Russia, and Saudi Arabia. They will kick off their campaign against the Pharaohs, before facing Saudi Arabia and Russia respectively.
They have announced their preliminary 26-man squad for the tournament, with Barcelona forward Luis Suarez and PSG’s Edinson Cavani being the most notable names.
Atletico Madrid defensive duo Diego Godín and José Giménez have also been inculded, as well as Rodrigo Bentancur, Martín Cáceres, Gastón Ramírez, Cristian Rodríguez, and Fernando Muslera.
On the other hand, Abel Hernández, Diego Rolán, Gastón Pereiro, Egidio Ríos, and Mauricio Lemos have been axed from the squad.
Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray), Martín Silva (Vasco da Gama), Martín Campaña (Independiente).
Defenders: Maxi Pereira (FC Porto), Diego Godín, José María Giménez (Atlético Madrid), Martín Cáceres (Lazio), Sebastián Coates (Sporting CP), Gastón Silva (Independiente), Guillermo Varela (Peñarol).
Midfielders: Cristian Rodríguez (Peñarol), Nicolás Lodeiro (Seattle Sounders), Gastón Ramírez, Lucas Torreira (Sampdoria), Carlos Sánchez, Jonathan Urretaviscaya (Monterrey), Matías Vecino (Inter Milan), Giorgian De Arrascaeta (Cruzeiro), Nahitan Nández (Boca Juniors), Rodrigo Bentancur (Juventus), Diego Laxalt (Genoa), Federico Valverde (Deportivo La Coruña).
Forwards: Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain), Luis Suárez (FC Barcelona), Cristhian Stuani (Girona), Maxi Gómez (Celta Vigo).
