Egyptian fans hit out at Sergio Ramos following Salah injury
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been hit by an angry backlash after his challenge on Mohamed Salah that left the Liverpool star injured.
Salah was forced off the field only 30 minutes into the UEFA Champions League final after a heavy challenge from Ramos. The 32-year-old defender hooked the Egypt international by the arm and the latter landed on his left shoulder before leaving the field in tears to be replaced by Adam Lallana.
Salah’s injury put his hopes of playing for Egypt at the World Cup in less than a month in jeopardy. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said in a post-match press conference that Salah’s injury looks serious. However, the Pharaohs’ national team doctor said he’s optimistic that the Egypt international will be able to make it to the World Cup, set to kick off mid-June.
The Real Madrid skipper wished Salah a speedy recovery after the game but that wasn’t enough for the Egyptian fans. Thousands of social media users in Egypt who were supporting Salah in the final, took their frustration online following the injury of their fellow countryman and blasted Ramos for the challenge. Several hashtags, including #MohamedSalah #WeAreAllLiverpool and #Ramos were trending on Twitter as the Egyptian fans accused the Spanish international of deliberately injuring Salah.
Many fans also flooded Ramos’ comments section on his official Facebook page with insults and negative comments, while others started sharing an online petition to UEFA and FIFA calling for the punishment of Ramos for “intentionally hurting” Salah.
