Nigeria winger Moses Simon ruled out of World Cup
The 22-year-old was named in Nigeria’s preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup, after scoring twice for the Super Eagles in the qualification campaign.
However, he picked up a thigh injury during his side’s training session on Thursday, which will keep him out for up to a month.
“Yes, Moses is injured and our medical staff told me he is out for at least three or four weeks,” Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said.
“This is a confirmation that he will not be with us for the World Cup.
“This is unfortunate because he was an important player for us during our qualification matches,” he added.
Simon, who has 17 caps to his name, made his international debut against Tanzania in 2015 and scored three international goals, with the first one coming against Cameroon in an international friendly.
He led his Belgian side Gent to the fourth place in the Belgian Pro League, after scoring six goals and assisting three times in 29 games.
Nigeria were drawn in group D alongside Argentina, Croatia, and Iceland. They will kick off their campaign against Croatia on June 16, before facing Iceland and Argentina on June 21 and 26 respectively.
