Nigeria settle for draw in friendly against DR Congo
The Super Eagles were drawn with Argentina, Croatia and Iceland in Group D of the World Cup. Nigeria will launch their campaign in the competition by facing Croatia in the opening game.
Nigeria started the game strongly through Simeon Nwankwo, known as Simy, who struck the crossbar with a left-footed attempt in the third minute before the ball falling in front of Kelechi Ihenancho whose shot on rebound hit Congo defender.
In the 16th minute, Bursaspor defender William Troost-Ekongs slotted home for the hosts after he tapped in the ball following Ogeni Onazi’s saved free-kick.
DR Congo bursted forward after the goal in search for the equaliser but their efforts only came on target in the 85th minute when they succeeded in snatching a penalty that was given away by Ola Aina and converted by Issam Mpeko for the encounter to end in 1-1 stalemate.
